Nine years ago I was a student of Randi's. I was at the time working for a commercials director as his assistant at a high profile company in Hollywood. He suggested I take the 'scripting' class with a view to working on his crew when he was shooting. We parted company soon afterwards and I was unemployed and half way through the course.
I was not really sure this was what I wanted to do, but I took the class and gave it a shot. As it turned out it was the best thing I ever did in my twelve years here in Los Angeles. Randi lit a fire in me that is still burning brightly today after all these years. She brought alive a subject that is both complex, technical and detailed; she made it sparkle with interest and I was brought to an understanding of film-making that I have never had to re-learn since those first few lessons.
Each class was well prepared and thoroughly researched in a way that only a truly experienced and dedicated script supervisor could present it; she left no stone unturned. She is a professional who has a big enough heart to share her knowledge and that is a rarity. The course was over all too soon - and I continued to take extra private lessons at Randi's house until I was ready to go out and script a student film at Art Center in Pasadena. I worked for free while I was pregnant and unemployed.
Randi gave me the tools to go out into the big bad film world with confidence, conviction and a mastery of my trade that I have used every day of my working life.
After Randi's course I was sure for the first time what I wanted to do in the film business. I had a newborn baby and I struggled at first but after about2 years I began to establish myself in the commercial world and make a good living. Since '94 I have worked with many of the very top commercial directors in the world - both here and in Europe.
I have never looked back - but I would love to give back to the woman to whom my family and I owe so much. How ironic that I could have a hand in helping Randi get a job all these years after she helped launch my career. I wish to recommend that anyone lucky enough to employ her or be taught by her snap up the opportunity while stocks last! She is a treasure in a world of takers she did nothing but give to me, and for that I will always be truly grateful.
